Xiaomi: The Copycat

The Smartphone market has become so dynamic & many new entrants are in the game nowadays. Considering Southeast Asia, the mobile phone market seems to be growing in a great speed.

As our news only focuses on Malaysia, so we talk all the aspects with respect to Malaysia.

Only a handful of Smartphone brands have made an impact in Malaysia.

In recent years, the market has exploded with products available at multiple price points. The top end or premium segment of the market is dominated by Apple. Huawei, LG, Lenovo, Honor and an assortment of other players make up the lower end of the market.

Samsung, which is the world’s largest Smartphone maker and Apple’s main competitor, manufactures both premium and cheap models. But, it is a diffuse and floundering consumer brand whereas Honor brand on the other side is making good news with its great customer service in Malaysia. No doubt Xiaomi is emerging as a big player in Malaysia but some serious critics have affected Xiaomi & the time has come for Xiaomi to take the things seriously.

The critics say that the Xiaomi’s design & style has been copied by Apple. Combining its own market strategies, Xiaomi sells its Smartphones for a cheaper rate & that causes a ripple effect in the industry making the smartphone industry to rethink & can become threat to some big players like Apple & Samsung.

There is no doubt that Xiaomi infringes patents and copies Apple, even in minute details. Much like Samsung which produced identical iPhones and iPads immediately after the product’s launch, Xiaomi copies designs, color specifications and technical specifications. The company is already witnessing problems due to its strategy. For example, Ericsson blocked sale of Xiaomi handsets in India due to copyright infringement.

The recent hot news in India was Xiaomi Faces Ban in India for Infringing on Ericsson Patents that made Xiaomi embarrassed & had to ban the sales for some time.

This news about Xiaomi also affected Malaysians & there was a dip in the smartphone sales.
